The Weed Patrol
Many of the little plants that can become garden pests are already beginning to flower and spread. The weed patrol seems to begin in February and continue until November.

It benefits gardeners to attend to the weeding early and often. Fortunately weeding is really an opportunity for multi-tasking. This becomes a time to consider the soil, look at it; feel it; smell it. All can give clues to health.

Sometimes it's nice to roll back, rest your back, and look around. How do things look from this random spot at this time of year? The more that you weed around your garden the more you become familiar with all of the little areas and how the relate to each other in a unified whole. While you weed you are also designing!

After an area is well weeded a light application of rock phosphate and greensand can be beneficial. I like to top dress the bed with an inch or so of Cedar Grove Compost. The bed can now rest in a tidy fashion until you are ready to plant.
